They brewed several styles, including a stout, an amber, and a pilsner. They brewed in 8-barrel batches and served from 2-barrel holding tanks. We did have family members in Mexico who were VP’s at two of the big breweries who also encouraged us.” When asked about the motivations for the brewery, she explains, “We wanted to be different from all the other Mexican restaurants, offering our own light beers that would complement the village-style food. “None of us had prior brewing experience.” Her brother and ex-husband did the brewing and were trained upon opening. The brew system was purchased new, what Lupe describes as “a showpiece copper-clad kettle and fermenting tanks.” She still has the equipment in storage. They brewed seasonally and from extract, a very small footprint.” The brewery was behind glass in the middle of the dining room. “There were no breweries besides us and them in the Coachella Valley. Hans Johnson remembers visiting the restaurant, around the time he was setting up Babe’s brewhouse in 2002. She even had her own version of a Mexican Mac-n-cheese. I miss how the family, friends and customers from young to old, would gather around and enjoy a meal after a hard day’s work.” Everything mom served had a twist of traditional and home-style cooking. Although we offered a variety of traditional meals, mom was known for her daily lunch buffets for the surrounding lunch crowd. There’s a sense of pride as Lupe recalls the food: “Mom’s home cooking was the common theme. (Now deceased, Maureen Daly was an acclaimed novelist, who retired to Palm Springs but continued to write restaurant reviews.)
